The Lilliputian Presence of the Photographer in the Four-Colour World of the Postcard
The Lilliputian Presence of the Photographer in the Four-Colour World of the Postcard
My study of the graphic arts and my work on photographic material culture were the catalysts sparking my interest in exploring the aesthetics of offset-printed postcards. Prospecting for the unlikely presence of a few Lilliputian photographers hidden under their glossy inks, I enjoyed carefully poring over these vernacular urban theatres with my magnifying glass and my scanner’s pixels, poking around for a few tiny amateur shutterbugs concealed in their midst. Within the network and simulacrum of four-colour printing, a vividly picturesque scene is reproduced, revealed by an absent photographer.
